Testing
& Advancement: Kung Fu Classes
(Jow
Ga, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, all Kids Martial Arts Programs)
As you progress in your training at Chan’s
Kung Fu, your current rank within the style will be signified by
a colored sash (similar to the colored belts worn in Karate and
Tae Kwon Do). Each rank has specific requirements that must be met,
including a minimum amount of training time between ranks and a
certain level of demonstrated skill in your art.
While the requirement s varies depending on your current rank and
which style you are practicing, the process of taking the test is
universal between all of our classes.
Typically a Test will be scheduled for a specific
style once every one to two months. Students who desire to test
must sign up for the test a minimum of one week in advance of the
testing date and pay a testing fee of $35 at the time of registration.
The $35 test registration fee includes the cost of the test, any
materials used during test, and upon completion of a successful
test, a new sash and certificate of rank to be awarded to the student.
Members of our Little Tiger's and Youth class have
slightly different fee schedules depending on if they are taking
a full test (moving from one solid color to another), or taking
a "stripe" test (an intermediary test as the student progresses
through a level - typically there are 2-3 stripes per level).
Once a student registers for a test they must
take a “pre-test” with an instructor, who will review
a majority of the requirements of the test with the student to make
sure they are truly ready to test. The instructor may make recommendations
and/or corrections to the student, who may have to take another
pre-test after making the needed corrections. Students must pass
the “pre-test” stage in order to be allowed to take
the formal test.
On testing day, students should arrive a minimum
of 15 minutes early to stretch and warm themselves up. Students
who are late to a test will not be allowed to test and must wait
for the next scheduled test. Students should wear their best uniform
when testing, and pay close attention to what is going on during
the test.

Testing
& Advancement: Combat Judo
The testing process for Combat Judo is identical
to that listed above, only that practioners of Combat Judo use traditional
Japanese belts to mark rank rather then a chinese sash. Combat Judo
tests are scheduled every two to three months. Students must sign
up and pre-test a minimum of one week in advance of the testing
date and pay a $35 Test Registration Fee at the time of sign up.
Testing
& Advancement: Muay Thai
Muay Thai does not have colored belts or sashes
- the only way you mark where you stand is how well you do in competition. |
