Uniforms & Equipment

Uniforms & Equipment
Almost all of our Martial Arts Programs require the students to wear an appropriate uniform to attend class. In addition, the Combat Sports classes (and some of the other ones as well) will require specific equipment to participate in all or some of the activities during training. To find out what sort of uniform or equipment you will need to participate, locate the program you are interested in below and you will find a complete list of equipment that you will need to get started.

Purchasing Uniforms & Equipment
All of the Student Uniforms, Judo Gi's, sparring gear and other equipment that you may need for your training can be purchased at very reasonable prices in our Pro Shop located right inside of Chan's Kung Fu School. Purchasing your equipment directly from the school has two major benefits: First, you know that what you've purchased meets all the requirements needed to allow you to use it in class, and second, that by purchasing your uniforms and equipment from the school you've reinvested in your own training - the dollars spent on that gear go back into the school to help pay for the facilities and new equipment for the classes rather then being lost when you purchase items elsewhere.

When purchasing safety gear for sparring (or really any equipment), remember that you get what you pay for. While you don't necessarily need the most expensive or shiniest equipment, you are making an investment in your own safety - why put your own safety in jeopardy by purchasing sub-par gear to save a buck. Not only do you chance injury, which prevents you from training, cheap gear tends to break down quickly and will need to be replaced far more often, costing you more money in the long run.

(Jow Ga, Wing Chun, Tai Chi and all Kids Martial Arts Programs)

Uniforms
All students must wear either a traditional black chinese-style student uniform or uniform pants with a Chan's Kung Fu School T-Shirt. There are a few options available to choose from, depending on the style of uniform you prefer.

Satin or silk performance uniforms, uniforms from different schools and street clothes are not permissible during regular classes.

Shoes
Students have the option to practice either barefoot or wear a thin-soled martial arts shoe (boxing and wrestling shoes are also allowed). Students cannot wear street shoes or any other type of that could leave marks on the floor or track dirt inside the training area.

Average Martial Art Shoe $32 / Pair

Combat Judo
For Combat Judo you will be required to purchase a Judo Gi, which is a type of uniform similar to a karate gi, but made of much sturdier material to withstand the strain of constantly being pushed, pulled, twisted, etc. There are many types and grades of Judo Gi's, however we suggest most beginners to stick with a basic Single Weave Gi. Students may wear either White or Blue Judo Gi's, though Blue ones tend to be more expensive.

We also recommend men to wear groin protection during training. All training is done barefoot.

Muay Thai Kick Boxing
Muay Thai doesn't have a specific uniform - most members choose to train in shorts and a t-shirt. Students are allowed to wear any work out clothes that are in good taste (no offensive images or wording). Eventually, most Muay Thai fighters will get a pair of Thai Shorts for training and fighting, but its not required.

All students will be required to have a complete set of safety equipment, which is required to spar and different pieces may be required to participate in various drills during training. All students are required to have the following items: Mouth Piece, Groin Protection (males), 16oz. Boxing Gloves, Boxing Head Gear, Shin/In-Step Protectors. Though not required, we also highly recommend elastic hand wraps and ankle supports.

Mixed Martial Arts
As you will be training in both Combat Judo and Muay Thai in our MMA Program, please refer to the equipment requirements for those training programs.

In addition to the gear required for Combat Judo and Muay Thai, you'll want to get a pair of good MMA Training Gloves. These are not required immediately, as when you start off you'll primarily be working with Boxing Gloves until you develop good control and precision striking, at which time you'll start moving into the smaller MMA Training Gloves. We use Combat Sports IMF Tech Training MMA Gloves in our Program - they offer a good balance of safety and comfort in training.
